Brand Name: Neurontin

Generic Name: Gabapentin

Primary Use: Neuropathic pain, Seizure disorder

Dosage Forms:
  • Oral tablets of 600mg and 800mg
  • Oral capsules of 100 mg, 300mg and 400mg
  • Oral solution of 250mg/5mL
Common Side Effects:
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Fever, chills
  • Drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness
  • Sore throat, body ache
  • Slurred speech
  • Tremors, body imbalance
  • Abnormal eye movements
  • Pedal swelling
  • Headache
  • Jerky movements
  • Diplopia
Serious side effects:
  • Increase in seizures
  • Unusual or involuntary ocular movements
  • Extreme drowsiness
  • Weakness
  • Balance difficulties, abnormal muscle movements
  • Shallow breathing
  • Cyanosis of skin, lips fingers and toes
  • Confusion
How long should it be taken?

Can be used for longer than three months. Doctor’s supervision is needed to stop the medication due to the possibility of withdrawal symptoms.

Effectiveness:
  • Neurontin has demonstrated significant pain relief for neuropathic pain (including post herpetic neuralgia) and peripheral diabetic neuropathy between daily doses of 1800mg and 3600mg.
  • Neurontin has been found efficacious adjunctive treatment choice for partial seizures.
