Why is there such a stigma surrounding therapy?

I think therapy is a key thing for many people who struggle with their mental health. I myself have never actually gone to a therapist, though I have thought about it for my weight, social anxiety and anxiety in general. Do you guys have any feats about seeing a therapist? Why are people sometimes scared to see one? I think it comes down to talking about yourself. Some of us just don't like to air our personal feelings to some stranger, even if they are there as a means to help you.

But, I think we need to have therapy and I think some people do need it. Personally I don't know if I need it, maybe one day I will try it out, but right now I don't see a need, at least not yet.

The stigma around therapy often comes from misconceptions and cultural beliefs. I’ve noticed that people sometimes see seeking help as a sign of weakness or failure, rather than a proactive step for mental health. Media portrayals and lack of education about mental health also reinforce the idea that therapy is only for “serious” problems. For example, friends or family might dismiss counseling as unnecessary, even when it could prevent bigger issues later. Overcoming this stigma requires normalizing conversations about mental well-being and showing that therapy is a tool for growth, not a label.
