Brand Name: Risperdal

Generic Name: Risperidone

Primary Use: Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder

Dosage Forms:
  • Oral tablets of 0.25mg, 5mg, 1mg, 2mg, 3mg and 4mg
  • Risperdal M-TAB orally disintegrating tablets of 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg and 3mg
  • Oral solution of 1mg/mL
Side Effects:
  • Overexcitement, restlessness
  • Memory problems
  • Balance loss, shuffling gait, abnormal body movements
  • Rash
  • Muscle spasm
  • Ophthalmoplegia
  • Aggression and agitation
  • Anxiety, difficulty in concentration
  • Lip smacking
  • Speech and vision problems
  • Sleeping disturbances
  • Unusual facial expressions
  • Increased urination
  • Mask-like face
  • Weakness in limbs
  • Tics
  • Back and chest pain
Less common side effects:
  • Decrease libido
  • Menses irregularities
  • Oily skin
  • Voice loss
How long should it be taken?

To be used as per doctor’s advice.

Long term consequences:
  • Weight gain
  • Hyperprolactinaemia and prolactinoma
  • Increase in blood sugar
  • Tardive dyskinesia
