Can You Stay Friends After a Mentally Exhausting Relationship?

Some people try to stay friends after breaking up, but emotional residue can linger. Can two people with shared mental struggles truly transition into a healthy friendship?

I personally won't be able to maintain a stable friendship after I have had a mentally exhausting and draining relationship with them. There would be some sort of resentment towards the person for what they have made me to go through.

It depends on the emotional maturity of both people. If both have processed the breakup and set clear boundaries, friendship can work. But if there’s lingering pain or dependency, staying friends often reopens wounds rather than healing them. Time and distance usually make the difference.
