Generic Name: Sertraline

Primary Use: Depression, Anxiety disorders, OCD, Panic disorder, PTSD, Premenstrual Dysmorphic Disorder

Dosage Forms:
  • Oral tablets of 25mg, 50mg and 100mg
  • Oral capsules of 150 mg and 200mg
  • Oral solution of 20g/mL
Common Side Effects:
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Insomnia or sleepiness
  • Tremors
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of appetite
  • Agitation
  • Decreased libido or ejaculation failure
  • Indigestion
Most common side effects seen in children and adolescents:
  • Frequent urination
  • Increased muscle agitation
  • Epistaxis
  • Weight disturbances
  • Slower growth rate
How long should it be taken?

Use for 6 months to a year after the alleviation of symptoms of the primary disease.

Most common consequences of long-term use:
  • Slower erection
  • Lower sex drive
  • Fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
Effectiveness:
  • According to research, Sertraline is less likely to reduce depressive symptoms in first 6 weeks of treatment in primary care, however, its effective for anxiety related symptoms.
