Depression in Displaced Populations

Refugees face loss of home, identity, and purpose. How can humanitarian organizations better address depression and hopelessness among those forced to flee their countries?

That’s such an important issue that we need to look into. A lot of people think that displacement is just a physical thing , Nah, it goes beyond that because it can fracture our identity, community and destroy our sense of security. Healing will begin when the affected persons reclaim their voices and connect, it's not just only when they receive aids.

By providing mental health counseling, community support programs, safe spaces, education, and opportunities to rebuild purpose.

This is making me think of the ongoing conflict in Gaza between Israel and Palestine. I can only imagine the depression citizens in both areas feel on a daily basis. I know there has been a ceasefire recently along with 20 hostages released, so that is a big win in my book. But there has been a lot of war, bombing and even genocide over there, and I can't even imagine what it'd be like to have to live in that area, seeing all the bloodshed and death. Depression probably runs rampant over there.

I think it helps to bring in support. And with the ceasefire and recent hostage release by Hamas, I think we're going to see some good come of it. I hope. But I think the best thing that can be done now, is to provide housing, mental health counseling, and more to help ease people back into regular day life after all of this.

Getting displaced from a well settled life is tough and a mental agony that is beyond imagination. Getting the visuals of war, natural disasters etc.is upsetting enough for the ones who are just seeing it and not even going through the real pain. It takes a lot of time, effort, patience and care to build a decent life. All gone is not something easy to accept and move on. Such traumas stay for lifelong and leave a life-long hurt.
